Clay and Mud Dispersion Control in Water-Based Drilling Fluids
High solids, sticky clay and unstable rheology can look similar in the field but require different functions. MUD-OFF is positioned as a drilling-fluid dispersant; it is not the same function as reactive-clay inhibition or polymer encapsulation.
Use an inhibition strategy. MUDOCLAY-OFF is the dedicated Mudolog reactive-clay inhibitor.
Encapsulation and reactive-solids control may point to POLYWELL or DRILL-WELL.
A dispersant such as MUD-OFF may be appropriate after the mechanism and complete mud system are reviewed.
MUDOTHIN is the separate thinner/dispersant product and should not be treated as interchangeable without a system review.
Dispersant, inhibitor and encapsulating polymer are different functions
Used where the required function is clay- and mud-dispersion control in a compatible water-based system.
Targets hydration, swelling, stickiness and water sensitivity of reactive clay or shale.
Support encapsulation and reactive-solids management during drilling.
Do not select a dispersant from viscosity alone
High viscosity can come from useful rheology, drilled-solids accumulation, reactive clay, contamination or an imbalanced treatment programme. Check mud weight, solids, water chemistry, rheology trend and formation behavior before adding a dispersant.
What Mudolog needs from you
Send the current mud formulation and field symptom so the required function can be identified before product selection.
- Drilling application and formation
- Current mud products
- Make-up water / salinity if known
- Marsh funnel or rheology trend
- Mud weight / solids trend
- Main operational symptom
MUD-OFF — Drilling Fluid Dispersant
Send the formation, water and current mud programme. Mudolog can distinguish whether the primary need is inhibition, encapsulation, thinning or dispersion control.
