Drilling Fluid Dispersant vs Clay Inhibitor

CLAY CONTROL GUIDE

Drilling Fluid Dispersant vs Clay Inhibitor

A clay inhibitor is used to reduce hydration, swelling, stickiness or water sensitivity of reactive clay and shale. A drilling-fluid dispersant is used when the required function is dispersion or rheology control in a compatible mud system. These functions are not interchangeable.

Clay inhibitor

Use an inhibitor when the objective is to reduce hydration, swelling, stickiness or water sensitivity of reactive clay or shale. Selection depends on mineralogy, water chemistry, salinity, temperature and the complete drilling-fluid package.

Drilling-fluid dispersant

Use a dispersant when the diagnosed requirement is dispersion or rheology control in a compatible water-based mud. Solids loading, mud weight, rheology trend, contamination and water chemistry should be checked before treatment.

Do not treat the two functions as interchangeable

An inhibitor does not replace a dispersant when the problem is rheology or solids dispersion, and a dispersant does not provide dedicated control of clay hydration and swelling. Diagnose the mechanism first; encapsulating polymers such as POLYWELL or DRILL-WELL are a third, separate function.
