Effective opening size

The sealing material must interact with the fracture or void. Material that is much smaller than the flow path may simply be carried into the formation.

Shape and mechanism

Fibers can form a mat, swelling materials can expand after placement, and sized solids can provide the packing structure needed for a low-permeability seal.

Pressure condition

If losses are induced by excessive circulating pressure, the pressure cause should be corrected in parallel with any LCM treatment.

Pumping restrictions

Bit jets, screens, motors and surface equipment place practical limits on the largest or longest materials that can be placed safely.

Carrier-fluid rheology

The base mud or pill must suspend and transport the LCM to the loss zone without becoming unnecessarily difficult to pump.

Treatment objective

Seepage reduction, partial-return recovery and treatment of a major open fracture may require different material distributions and placement methods.

Using swelling and fibrous components
