Bored Pile Drilling in Clay: Sticky Soil, Slurry Contamination and Polymer Selection

Clay problems in bored piles should be separated into at least three mechanisms: sticky spoil, fine-solids contamination and true water-sensitive clay hydration/swelling. The treatment is different for each.

Sticky clay is not automatically reactive clay

Sticky spoil and difficult bucket discharge may occur without severe swelling. Track density, Marsh trend and tool behaviour before selecting an inhibitor.

Fine solids

Clay can enter the slurry as very fine material, producing high density + low sand. Adding more bentonite to a dirty mineral slurry can worsen total solids. In polymer systems, more polymer does not remove the clay already present.

Polymer role

POLYWELL and DRILL-WELL can support encapsulation and reactive-solids control. Where the actual problem is clay hydration, swelling or water sensitivity, MUDOCLAY-OFF is the distinct dedicated inhibition function.

Lubricant comes later

If torque or casing drag is driven by sticky clay and poor cleaning, control the formation/solids problem first. MUDOLUBE is reserved for genuine residual friction after stability and solids causes are excluded.

Clay-control functions are different

Use polymer control, dedicated inhibition and lubrication only for the function actually missing.

POLYWELL → DRILL-WELL → MUDOCLAY-OFF → MUDOLUBE →
