What Does CMC Do in Drilling Mud? Filtration and Viscosity Control

CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) is a water-soluble cellulose-based polymer used in water-based drilling fluids mainly to reduce filtration and adjust rheology. Its viscosity contribution depends on the selected grade.

Why is filtration controlled?

When the liquid phase of the mud enters a permeable formation, a filter cake develops on the wellbore wall. Uncontrolled filtration can contribute to thick filter cake, excessive fluid loss and some wellbore-stability problems. The objective is not zero filtration, but controlled filtration and a suitable filter cake.

What is CMC LV?

CMC LV is the low-viscosity grade. It is selected when filtration must be reduced while limiting additional mud viscosity as much as practical.

What is CMC HV?

CMC HV provides filtration control together with a more noticeable contribution to viscosity and suspension. It can be considered where both fluid-loss control and rheology support are required.

What is the difference between CMC LV and CMC HV?

Requirement CMC LV CMC HV
Filtration control Primary Primary
Viscosity contribution Low More pronounced
If the mud is already viscous May be more suitable Use carefully

What is the difference between CMC and PAC?

Both are cellulose-derived polymers, but purity, degree of substitution, salt tolerance and filtration performance can differ. PAC is often considered where tighter filtration control or more difficult water conditions are involved. See the PAC HV and PAC LV guide.

Does water quality affect performance?

Yes. Calcium, magnesium, salinity and pH can affect CMC hydration and performance. If make-up water is hard, Soda Ash conditioning may need to be considered first.

How should CMC be mixed?

Add the product in a controlled manner into a high-turbulence zone, avoid dumping it rapidly at one point, and allow enough time for full hydration. Lumpy polymer does not deliver its full performance.

Frequently asked questions

Does CMC increase mud weight?

That is not its primary function. Weighting materials such as barite are used when mud weight must be increased.

Is a Marsh funnel enough to evaluate CMC performance?

No. Filtration and, where possible, rheology results should be evaluated as well.
