How Is Drilling Bentonite Quality Evaluated? Which Properties Matter?
Drilling bentonite quality cannot be determined from Marsh-funnel time alone. In suitable water, the product should provide adequate rheology, suspension, controlled filtration and a good filter cake while containing a low level of undesirable coarse particles.
Is every bentonite a drilling bentonite?
No. Mineral structure, montmorillonite content, natural sodium/calcium character, activation, grinding and impurities all affect field performance. Bentonite used in another industry should not automatically be assumed suitable for drilling.
What does API bentonite mean?
API 13A / ISO 13500 defines technical requirements and test methods for drilling-fluid materials. “API” is not simply a marketing term; it is a technical compliance claim that must be verified. Technical data and batch analysis should be requested for the relevant grade.
Are high-yield bentonite and API bentonite the same?
No. High yield describes the ability to reach target rheology with a lower product concentration. API compliance concerns meeting defined technical requirements.
Which tests should be considered?
- Marsh funnel: rapid field indicator, not sufficient by itself.
- Rheology: indicates carrying, suspension and flow behaviour.
- Filtration: evaluates fluid loss and filter-cake quality.
- Wet screen: indicates coarse minerals and incompletely dispersed residue.
- Sand content: helps monitor undesirable coarse solids.
- Hydration behaviour: shows response to time and water quality.
Why is water quality so important?
Calcium, magnesium, salinity and pH can strongly affect bentonite hydration. The same bentonite can give different viscosity and filtration results in different waters. In hard water, Soda Ash conditioning may need to be considered first.
How is bentonite yield compared?
Use the same water, mixing energy and hydration time, then compare the kg/m³ required to reach the target performance. More meaningful than price per tonne is the cost per m³ to achieve the required mud performance.
Does very fine grinding guarantee quality?
No. Very fine grinding cannot turn mineralogically weak ore into high-quality drilling bentonite. Active-clay content, hydration, rheology and filtration must be evaluated together.
ALKABEN – Drilling Bentonite
The ALKABEN family is positioned for viscosity, suspension, filter-cake development and wellbore support. Any API or project-specification claim should be verified from actual test results for the relevant grade.
Frequently asked questions
Does bentonite colour indicate quality?
Not by itself. Actual quality must be evaluated by laboratory and field testing.
Does more bentonite always make a better mud?
No. Unnecessary bentonite can increase solids loading, viscosity and pump pressure.
