How to Switch from Bentonite to Polymer Slurry on a Bored Pile Project
Switching support fluids changes the operating system, not only the chemical. Polymer requires different preparation, solids management, QC interpretation and bottom-cleaning practice.
Define why you are switching
Set measurable objectives such as lower disposal, smaller plant footprint, clay control or faster preparation. Compare total cost per completed pile rather than product price per kilogram.
Qualify ground and water
Review the complete geotechnical profile and test actual make-up water. A water source acceptable for bentonite still deserves separate polymer qualification.
Clean the plant
Residual bentonite, settled sand and old sludge can create an uncontrolled blend. Unless a blend is intentional and qualified, commission polymer on a clean system.
Create polymer-specific QC
Do not copy bentonite density/Marsh/sand limits blindly. Establish a fresh polymer baseline and approved working/pre-concrete criteria from product, project and trial results.
Rewrite bottom cleaning
Polymer may allow faster settling of coarse solids. The procedure should state initial cleanout, final cleanout, bottom verification and fluid exchange rules.
Use a trial pile
Verify the full sequence before broad production: mix → excavate → monitor → clean → pre-concrete QC → concrete → review.
Use the polymer trial procedure as the field checklist.
Conversion routes
POLYWELL offers a concentrated powder route; DRILL-WELL offers convenient liquid dosing.
