What Is Drilling Foam? How Is It Used and How Is Dosage Selected?

Drilling foam is a surfactant-based drilling additive used especially in air and foam-assisted drilling to help carry cuttings from the bottom of the borehole to surface. With water and air it forms a controlled foam structure that can provide greater carrying capacity than compressed air alone.

How does drilling foam work?

Surfactants reduce the surface tension of water and allow the injected air to form many small bubbles. Foam with suitable stability helps surround and carry cuttings through the annulus to surface. Performance depends not only on product concentration but also on air rate, water rate, water chemistry, hole diameter, formation and cuttings load.

Why is drilling foam used?

  • To support cuttings transport to surface,
  • to reduce solids accumulation at the bottom of the hole,
  • to support hole cleaning with lower water use,
  • to help reduce dust in air drilling,
  • to limit regrinding of cuttings downhole.

Where can it be used?

Drilling foam may be considered in water-well, mining-exploration, selected core and geothermal applications, and air-rotary drilling. Suitability should be determined from the formation, hole geometry, compressor capacity and water influx.

Why is foam stability important?

Foam that is too weak may drop cuttings before they reach surface. Foam that is excessively stable can make tank handling and transfer more difficult. The objective is not maximum foam volume, but foam stable enough to carry cuttings and manageable at surface.

Does water quality affect foam performance?

Yes. Hardness, salinity, pH and fine-solids content can change foam generation and persistence. The same product may perform differently in different water sources. Whenever possible, field testing should use the actual make-up water.

How is dosage selected?

There is no single universal dosage. Start with a controlled low concentration and adjust gradually by observing foam quality, returned cuttings and hole cleaning. If air and water rates are unsuitable, simply increasing chemical concentration may not deliver the expected result.

Are a foaming agent and a defoamer the same product?

No. REVOFOAM is used to create controlled foam. MUDODEF is used to control unwanted foam in drilling fluids. They are not alternatives. See the drilling-fluid foam-control guide for the distinction.

REVOFOAM – Drilling Foaming Agent

REVOFOAM is a concentrated foaming agent used in air and foam-assisted drilling to create controlled foam and support cuttings transport.

Frequently asked questions

Does more drilling foam always work better?

No. Overdosing can create unnecessary surface foam, higher chemical consumption and handling problems. The air/water ratio and formation conditions must be considered together.

Can drilling foam be used in hard water?

It can, but the product should be tested in the actual water. Hardness can reduce the performance of some surfactant systems.
