Diaphragm Wall and Barrette Support Fluids: Bentonite, Polymer and Blended Systems
Support fluid is a temporary construction material with a structural function during diaphragm-wall and barrette excavation. It must stabilize the open panel, remain manageable through treatment and cleaning, and finally be displaceable by tremie concrete.
Three system architectures
ALKABEN provides the conventional mineral route. POLYWELL and DRILL-WELL provide polymer routes. Engineered blends can combine mineral retention with polymeric soil-control functions where qualified.
Diaphragm walls are not simply large bored piles
Long rectangular panels, large exposed wall area, grabs/hydromills, large slurry volumes, reinforcement cages and long concrete operations make slurry treatment a major production system.
Bentonite route
Strong familiarity, mineral interface/filter-cake behaviour and established treatment plants can be advantages. The challenge is keeping reused slurry clean enough through repeated excavation.
Polymer route
Low mineral-solids loading and simpler preparation can reduce plant/disposal burden, but polymer-specific trial, QC and bottom-cleaning procedures are essential.
Final readiness
Whatever the fluid, the sequence is mix → excavate → maintain head → control solids → clean panel/joints → install reinforcement → condition final slurry → concrete.
