HDD FORMATION GUIDE

HDD Drilling Fluids for Sand, Gravel and Cobble Formations

Granular formations shift the HDD fluid priority toward bore support, filtercake, suspension and loss control. As particle size increases from sand to gravel and cobble, filtration can turn into true whole-mud loss.

01Sand

Prioritize bore support and filtration without creating unnecessary solids.

02Gravel

Watch the transition from high filtration to actual whole-mud loss.

03Cobble

Heavy cuttings make suspension and reaming practice critical.

04Mixed intervals

Clay seams can add inhibition and encapsulation requirements to the granular programme.

Sand needs filtercake, not just viscosity

ALKABEN provides the structural base where bentonite-supported bore stability is required. If fluid loss remains excessive, MUDOPAC-LV, MUDOPAC-HV or MUDOFIL-CMC can refine filtration according to the rheological response required.

SAND: BASE FLUID & FILTRATION

Gravel can turn filtration into lost circulation

When whole mud disappears into large connected openings, PAC/CMC alone may no longer solve the mechanism. SEALFIBER provides fibrous bridging; FRACPLUG provides swelling/polymeric void filling where compatible.

GRAVEL: BRIDGING / LOSS CONTROL

Cobble is also a transport problem

Large, dense cuttings can settle along the low side of the bore during reaming. MUDOZAN can support suspension, but adequate flow and controlled reaming remain essential.

COBBLE: SUSPENSION / CARRYING CAPACITY

Mixed clay intervals need a different function

POLYWELL/DRILL-WELL become relevant where drilled clay disperses, while MUDOCLAY-OFF belongs to hydration/swelling inhibition. These products should only enter the programme where reactive clay is actually present.

MIXED REACTIVE-CLAY INTERVALS

Do not treat every granular problem with more bentonite

If torque rises because cuttings are accumulating, more mineral solids can make the system harder to pump and recycle. Separate bore support, suspension, filtration and whole-mud loss before changing the formulation.

TECHNICAL NOTE

Know when the mechanism changes from fluid loss to whole-mud loss

Full returns with high filtrate invasion point toward filtration control. A major drop in returned volume points toward bridging/sealing chemistry and operational loss-zone management.

HDD TECHNICAL RFQ

What Mudolog needs from you

Send the field variables that change the fluid decision. A short, technically complete HDD RFQ is more useful than a generic request for “mud chemical price”.

  • Formation description
  • Approximate sand / gravel / cobble content
  • Bore length
  • Pilot and reamer diameters
  • Water source
  • Current fluid
  • Return condition
  • Approximate loss rate
  • Pump capacity if known

HDD FLUID SUPPORT

Build the fluid around the actual water, formation and field symptom

Share the bore geometry, make-up water, current mud, returns and the specific clay, cleaning, filtration, friction or loss problem. Mudolog can then route the enquiry to the correct product function.
