CITRIC ACID is used as a source of hydrogen (H⁺) ions to lower the pH of drilling fluids. Citric acid forms a hydrogen ion layer around active clays, reducing the zeta potential (the attraction and repulsion forces between particles) and weakening their ability to absorb water. This reduces clay dispersion and swelling in the drilling fluid.
