CAUSTIC SODA is used to increase the pH of drilling mud and to maintain alkalinity. The mud should always remain in a basic environment, and in lignosulfonate systems the pH is typically maintained within the range of 9.5–10.5. Caustic soda releases heat when dissolved in water and is hazardous to health.
